Best Natural Biodegradable Cat Litter Reviews

In this article I will be reviewing what I believe to be the best natural/biodegradable cat litters currently available on the market. Many cat owners prefer to use a litter that is made from natural materials, and also to really help the environment.

They should of course be applauded for doing that. The manufacturers of cat litter also know that the more popular clay based litters ultimately end up in a landfill site. That is why they started making these biodegradable style of litters.

Clay litters also have to be mined from the earth which is of course damaging. Natural litters are all made from natural materials, which are grown and as such are a great deal more helpful to our environment.

Natural or biodegradable cat litters are made from a variety of materials which include recycled paper, corn husks, coconut husks, almond shells and even wood. There are plenty of natural choices for cat owners rather than using clay based litters.

Benefits of Natural Cat Litter

There are a considerable number of benefits if you decide to buy a natural or biodegradable litter for your cat. I will list these below so as you have all the information you need to make an educated buying decision.

Clay Litters vs Natural Litters

The huge majority of cat owners buy and use clay cat litters. All of them use a silica powder. There is some evidence that this silica dust is a leading causes of respiratory problems. There is also more evidence that is is a possible carcinogen as well. If you want to read about the risks to human health from cat litter, please click here. These risks refer to clay based litters and not the natural litters shown on this page.

In addition to this Bentonite is another substance used in clay cat litters for its absorbency powers. However it can cause serious damage if ingested by mistake, and this can happen especially with kittens.

The actual clay used for litters is mined from the earth and is a non-biodegradable and as such is harmful to the environment for those two reasons.

Natural litters are much kinder to the environment as they don't damage the earth to make them and they are also biodegradable.

Much Safer for Your Cats and Family

Natural litters are much safer for your cats and also for your family. Most natural cat litters are made from vegetable fibers, corn husks, wheat, grass, recycled paper etc. That means they are free from toxins and toxic dusts. That is good in terms of respiratory problems for both your cat and your home.

Clumping Capability

For years any clumping litter was simply a type of clay based litter. Many cat owners don't know that these more natural litters also have clumping capability. Now not all of them have that but many of them do.

Clumping does make it much easier to scoop poop and hardened urine from a litter box, and that does help control odors and also makes cleaning up a great deal easier.

Biodegradable

Clay litters and silica gel (crystal litters) all have to be bagged and placed into the garbage. Those types of litters can not be recycled and they can not be used for any type of gardening compost. In other words they are not biodegradable.

Natural litters can be used for compost. However I would highly recommend that the cat poop should never be used for composting as there are severe health risks when doing that. When a natural litter needs to be fully replaced, usually every 2-3 weeks, then that litter can be used for compost as long as poop and clumps have been removed.

Poop and clumps should be bagged and placed in the garbage as normal, but the remaining litter could be used in compost heaps or bins. I have done a full article here on compost and cat litter, if that is something that interests you.

Best Dust Free Natural Cat Litter

Almost any litter that I have ever used has contained a certain amount of dust. The same is true with almost every type of natural litter. I have never found a 100% dust free litter and I have used many types over the years.

Natural litter manufacturers usually claim that their litters are 99% dust free. That is pretty accurate for some manufacturers, but certainly not for them all. That said, in my experience any natural litter is less dusty than a clay based litter.

Silica gel or crystal litters are also a great choice for keeping dust down. Again I have written a useful article on how to control dust which you can read by clicking here.

When it comes to natural litters all of the ones shown on my list are advertised as being 99% dust free. You will find though that if you read my summary reviews above, that the top 3 in my list are the best for being almost dust free.

Best Non Tracking Natural Cat Litter

Tracking is when litter gets stuck on a cat's paw or coat and then gets trailed or tracked around the home. It is very annoying! Some litters are much better at reducing those than others.

Equally the type of litter box goes a long way to reducing tracking. Some litter boxes are far better at reducing tracking than others. In addition to that the number one thing that helps reduce tracking is to keep the litter box clean and dry.

Wet litter sticks to a cat's paws and coat more than anything else. The cleaner and drier the litter is the better. It is also a great idea to have a cat litter mat at the entrance to the box or even under the litter box, as this catches a lot of the litter.

The litter itself in all honesty doesn't make a huge difference if you follow my tips above.

Healthiest Cat Litter

Quite a few people have asked me over the years what is the healthiest cat litter? It is an interesting question and one that is pretty difficult to answer. The majority of the evidence available about cat litter is anecdotal. That simply means that statements are made by cat owners based on their individual experience. Here is an example:

"When I pour my cat litter into the box, the dust that comes up and makes me cough. That can not be good for you, so I would love to find a dust free litter. It can't be good for my cat either"

I do an enormous amount of research on cat behavior and also on the many things we use with cats including litter boxes, litter types, mats, food etc. The one thing I know from doing that, is that there is very little factual or scientific evidence on cat behavior, or how the many cat accessories impact on the health of a cat or their owners.

There is plenty of research on cat behavior but very little on litters, boxes, mats etc. So, when it comes to picking the healthiest cat litter, there is really no evidence available to determine what is the healthiest.

So with the sample quote above, this is really the only type of information that is available. The reality of that is this type of information is that is just one person's opinion. Other people will use the same litter and have a similar opinion and others will have a different opinion.

Some people simply assume that dust is bad, that it can be breathed in, and that might be bad for your lungs. Others will not see much dust and will not worry about it that much.

One thing is certain and that is a natural litter is always going to be healthier than other litters, simply because there are no artificial ingredients or chemicals added.

Natural Cat Litter DIY

A few cat owners will make their own version of cat litter. This can be as simple as hay or straw in a box. They may also add a little baking soda to the litter material to help control odors.

These do work fine, but they lack a few features that bought or commercial litters do have and are I believe important features. Those features include any capability to absorb urine and also the actual feel of the litter.

It is a well known cat behavior that they go to the toilet in soil or sand. That is built into their instinct and when they look for a litter, they will want a substance that feels like that. Commercial litters do that really well, and is the main reason a cat will use a litter box.

Hopefully you are now better informed as to the full range of natural/biodegradable litters that are available on the market. As you can see there are a lot of different types. In most cases you will have to perhaps try 2-3 of these different types to find out which work best for you and your cats.

I have always found these types of natural litters to be more expensive than the standard clay litters. That said you are most certainly doing your bit for the environment, and the majority of cats will use this type of litter.
